Can One Dehumidifier Cover a Whole Villa? Sizing and Placement in the UAE and Oman
Usually not, and you cannot tell from floor area alone. A dehumidifier treats the air it can circulate, so doors, corridors, staircases and ceiling height decide coverage as much as the square metres do.
A villa advertised as 300 m² is not one space. It is a set of rooms, some connected and some closed off, often across two floors. A unit rated for a given room size can serve a connected volume of roughly that size. It cannot reach through a closed bedroom door.
This page explains what the manufacturer’s ratings actually describe, how common villa layouts change the answer, and where Lukas and Lukas Pro realistically fit. If you are trying to work out whether you have a humidity problem in the first place, start with the coastal villa guide.
What the area and volume ratings mean
Stadler Form publishes two numbers for each model. Lukas is rated up to 70 m² or 175 m³. Lukas Pro is rated up to 175 m² or 435 m³.
Read the volume figure, not the area figure, whenever ceilings are not standard height. The area rating assumes a typical ceiling; the volume rating is the honest constraint. Dividing 435 by 175 gives about 2.5 m, which tells you the assumption built into Lukas Pro’s area figure.
Two cautions. The same number, 175, is Lukas Pro’s area in square metres and Lukas’s volume in cubic metres, so do not compare them. And the rated extraction of 20 and 50 litres a day is a maximum measured under test conditions, which Stadler Form states is only achievable from about 22 °C and 70% relative humidity. A cooled room at moderate humidity will not produce the headline figure, and that is normal.
Open-plan areas versus separate rooms
This is the distinction that matters most. Where air moves freely between spaces, a single unit can treat them as one volume. Where it does not, it cannot.
A connected living, dining and entrance area with wide openings behaves like one large room, and you can size against its combined volume. Four bedrooms off a corridor do not, even if their combined floor area is the same number.
So the useful measurement is not the villa’s total area. It is the area and ceiling height of the connected volume you actually intend to treat.
Closed doors, corridors, staircases and floors
A closed door is close to a wall as far as a dehumidifier is concerned. Bedrooms are usually the rooms people most want treated, and they are also the rooms most often closed.
Corridors slow air exchange even when doors are open, so a unit in a hallway serves the hallway well and the rooms off it poorly. Staircases and double-height voids connect floors, but they also let dry air rise away from where you wanted it.
Across two storeys, treat the floors as separate problems unless there is a genuinely open void between them. Moving one unit between rooms treats those rooms in turn. It does not give you simultaneous control in both, and the manual asks you to transport the unit upright, with the tank emptied, and to let it stand upright for at least 60 minutes before switching it on again. That makes relocation a planned task rather than something to do twice a day.
High ceilings change the arithmetic
Villa majlis and double-height living rooms are where area ratings mislead most. Multiply floor area by ceiling height and compare the result against the model’s cubic-metre rating.
A 60 m² room with a 3.5 m ceiling is 210 m³. That is inside Lukas Pro’s 435 m³ rating but well beyond Lukas’s 175 m³, even though 60 m² looks comfortably within Lukas’s 70 m² area figure. The area number alone would have given you the wrong answer.
Five layouts, and what they imply
These are illustrative examples to show the method, not test results or measured outcomes.
| Situation | What decides it | Usual implication |
|---|---|---|
| One affected bedroom in a large villa | The bedroom’s own volume, not the villa’s area | A single smaller unit in that room. Villa size is irrelevant |
| Connected living and dining area | Combined volume with the openings as they normally sit | One larger unit can suit, if the volume is within its rating |
| Several separate bedrooms | Whether doors stay open; each room’s volume | Usually one unit per room that needs it, or a rotation |
| Two-storey home | Whether a void genuinely connects the floors | Normally treat each floor as its own problem |
| High-ceiling living space | Area × height against the m³ rating | Size on volume; the area figure will flatter the unit |
Where Lukas and Lukas Pro fit
Lukas is rated up to 70 m² or 175 m³ and removes up to 20 litres a day. It needs a room of at least 4 m², which brings most bedrooms into range. It is the usual answer when one or two individual rooms are the problem.
Lukas Pro is rated up to 175 m² or 435 m³ and removes up to 50 litres a day, with a HEPA H11 filter included. It needs at least 7.2 m², which rules it out of small rooms, and it suits a large connected living area.
Neither is sold as whole-property coverage, and we will not describe them that way. Each is rated for a connected volume. Whether your villa is one such volume or six is a question about your layout. For model selection in a villa specifically, see our villa dehumidifier recommendation; for apartments, the Lukas apartment guide.
One larger unit or several zones?
There is no universal rule. Considerations rather than an answer:
- One larger unit suits a single big connected volume, needs one socket and one drain point, and gives you one appliance to maintain. It cannot help rooms it is shut out of.
- Several smaller units put capacity where the problem is, work with closed doors, and let you choose a quieter unit for a bedroom. They cost more in total, need more sockets and more drain planning, and mean more filters and tanks to look after.
In most villas only some rooms have a problem. Treating those rooms is usually more effective than buying the largest unit available and hoping it reaches.
Placement and drainage, from the manuals
- Firm, even, waterproof surface, indoors only.
- More than 50 cm from walls and large objects, with airflow unobstructed.
- At least 3 m from a bath, shower or pool.
- Never inside a cupboard or other closed space; the manual warns this may cause a fire.
- Minimum room floor area: 4 m² for Lukas, 7.2 m² for Lukas Pro.
- Optimal operating range 13 to 35 °C.
Drainage decides placement more often than people expect. The supplied 100 cm hose drains by gravity, so its end must sit lower than the outlet on the unit or the water will not drain and can overflow. In a villa that usually means a shower tray, a utility sink or a floor drain, and it is the reason a unit often cannot stand in the middle of the room you would have chosen. Without the hose, the tank fills and the unit switches itself off until it is emptied.
If the humidity stays high
Check the obvious things first: is the unit sized for the connected volume rather than the floor area, are the doors to the treated space actually closed, is the hygrostat set to a target rather than left on continuous, and is air flowing freely around the unit?
Then look past the appliance. Leaks, roof or terrace waterproofing, worn door and window seals, air-conditioning drainage and indoor laundry are all more powerful than any portable unit. Air conditioning does remove moisture while it cools, so a system running poorly changes everything; our AC and humidity guide covers the checks.
Where humidity is high throughout the property rather than in particular rooms, that is a building or system question. A qualified HVAC engineer or building professional should assess it, and no number of portable appliances will substitute for that.
Frequently asked questions
Usually not. A dehumidifier treats the air it can circulate, so it serves a connected volume rather than a property. A villa with closed bedroom doors and two floors is several separate volumes, and floor area alone cannot tell you whether one unit is enough.
Measure the connected space you actually want to treat, multiply floor area by ceiling height, and compare that against the model’s cubic-metre rating: 175 m³ for Lukas, 435 m³ for Lukas Pro. Use volume rather than area whenever ceilings are above about 2.5 m.
It will treat that bedroom if the unit is in it, and it will not treat that bedroom if the unit is outside it. A closed door is effectively a wall. That is why several separate bedrooms usually need either their own units or a planned rotation.
You can, and it treats each room in turn, but it does not give simultaneous control. The manual also asks you to empty the tank, transport the unit upright and let it stand upright for at least 60 minutes before switching it on again, so it is a planned move rather than a daily routine.
Often, unless a genuinely open void connects the floors. Warm humid air and dry air do not distribute evenly between storeys through a staircase alone. Treat each floor as its own problem and measure both.
No. The 175 m² rating describes one connected space at a typical ceiling height, not a property total. In a 300 m² villa divided into separate rooms, the relevant figure is the volume of whichever space you are treating.
On a firm, level, waterproof floor, more than 50 cm from walls and large objects, at least 3 m from a bath or shower, never in a cupboard, and in a room of at least 4 m² for Lukas or 7.2 m² for Lukas Pro. If you want continuous drainage, it also has to stand where the hose can run downhill to a drain.
Send us the layout
Sizing is a layout question, so a floor plan answers it faster than a description. Please include:
- Your location, and whether the property is coastal, lakeside or inland.
- Dimensions and ceiling height of each affected space.
- A floor plan or sketch showing which doors normally stay open.
- Humidity readings and the room temperature when you took them.
- How the air conditioning is used, and any moisture source you know of.
- Where a drain is available.
- Whether noise matters in any of the rooms.
Contact Stadler Form UAE and we will tell you which spaces one unit can realistically serve, which need their own, and what to check before buying. For Oman, ask us to confirm availability and support first, as the online store is set up for UAE delivery.
